DESCRIPTION: Bikes Not Bombs is a non-profit organization working for alternative transportation and community development. The group operates the Bicycle Recycling and Youth Training Center in Roxbury to promote environmental education, meaningful employment, and safe sustainable communities, both here in Roxbury and abroad (Bikes Not Bombs website).

The Earn-A-Bike program requires youth to earn a reconditioned bike through hours spent working on bikes and bike parts. Low participation of girls in the Earn-A-Bike program has led to the creation of the Girls Action Initiative, whereby girls participate in cycling, theater improvisation, and public speaking with other girls from many backgrounds.

In the Summer Youth Bicycle and Mechanics Program, youth who are 12 and up also earn reconditioned bicycles that have been saved from the trash. Youth training and leadership programs, as well as Bicycle Safety Training are also important parts of the youth programming at Bikes Not Bombs. Adults have opportunities to serve as mentors and teachers to youth.

There is also an international aspect to the Bikes Not Bombs organization. Over the last 17 years, the organization has sent more than 18,500 bikes to Nicaragua, El Salvador, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic.
