DESCRIPTION: The City's Boston Center for Youth and Family runs three community centers in central and southern Jamaica Plain (at English High School, Agassiz Elementary School, and Curtis Hall), two in Roslindale (Flaherty Pool and Archdale Community Center), and one in Mattapan (at Mattapan Elementary School). On the eastern edge of the Heart of the City on Talbot Avenue in Dorchester, lies the Perkins community center.
BCYF is a consolidation of Boston Community Centers, the Mayor's Office of Community Partnerships, the Boston 2:00 to 6:00 After-School Initiative, and the Recreation Division of the City's Parks and Recreation Department. The new agency came into being in July 2002 and is now the City agency in charge of the Boston Community Centers. The Centers are open year-round and require a small membership fee for the recreational, educational, and social services they provide. Almost all neighborhood community centers provide a free, walk-in breakfast and lunch to youth 18 and under during the summer administered through the school department.
